Volleyball
Successful Hagerstown Volleyball players participate in off-season Club Ball, and summer Fitness Lab, Leadership Academy, Open Gyms, and Team Camp. Current High School players alongside coaches help mold the future of Hagerstown Volleyball by working with our Elementary & Junior High Players during intramurals, clinics, and club seasons. All of our student-athletes are encouraged to play multiple sports throughout the school year.

Clinics for Grades K-4
Typically a Spring fundraiser program that lasts for approx 3 days and is a fun, skills-focused program where our High School and Junior High players help teach our younger players the basics of volleyball. The cost for this program in 2023 was $30.
5th & 6th Grade Intramurals
This is a School program typically offered in the Fall that lasts for approx 5 weeks, practicing for 2 days a week and playing matches 1 day a week. Coaches & High School players help coach these teams. HS players also learn the basics of officiating. The cost of this program is the purchase of a Team t-shirt.
Nettle Creek Volleyball Club (Grades 5-8)
This is a Club program outside of the school, but is a feeder program for our school teams. Our season usually begins with try-outs in November, and practices & tournaments in January, February, and March. The NCVBC is directed by Betsy Swimm. The cost for the 2023 season was $300.
Meet the Coaches
Head Coach: Brian Dale
Coach Brian has been coaching for 19 years and has been the Head Coach at Hagerstown since 2009. Prior to coaching here in his hometown, he helped coach a successful program at Union County (1992-94), remaining undefeated in the TEC all three seasons. His Hagerstown teams have won nine County Titles, six TEC Championships, four Sectionals, and one Regional Championship. He has been honored as Coach of the Year multiple times by both the Palladium Item (2014, 2016) and the Courier Times (2014, 2016, 2021). Brian has a Bachelor’s Degree in Behavioral Science from Indiana University and has been employed in the Social / Human Services field for 25+ years.
JV Coach: Ashley Vinson
Coach Ashley, a 2021 Hagerstown Graduate, has coached four volleyball seasons for us already, demonstrating great knowledge of the game and valuable communication skills. She is working on her Exercise Science / Pre-Physical Therapy degree at IUPUI. She is currently a Rehab Aide at Athletico Physical Therapy. Ashley is a superb role model for all of our players.
JV Coach: Laynie Vinson
Coach Laynie has also coached four volleyball seasons. She played softball at IU South Bend before transferring to IUEast. She just wrapped up her first year of teaching in the Kindergarten classroom at
Hagerstown Elementary School. Laynie’s insights and competitiveness are an asset to our program.
8th Grade Coach: Hannah Rogers
Coach Hannah, a 2017 Hagerstown Graduate, was a part of our Regional Championship Team. She has been coaching volleyball for three years and coached a Junior High team to a County Title in 2017. Hannah
graduated from IUEast and has completed her first full year of teaching at Hagerstown Elementary School.
7th Grade Coach: Julie Bowman
Coach Julie is a 2015 Hagerstown Graduate. She has been coaching volleyball for 5 years. She has led our Junior High teams to County Tourney titles in 2017, 2018, 2020 and 2021. Julie is organized and adds value to our programs across the board. She earned her Business Administration degree from Ivy Tech in 2020 and has been the Secretary for our Athletic Department since 2017.
Volunteer Coach: Tori Kelley
Coach Tori, a 2022 Hagerstown Graduate, has completed three seasons of coaching volleyball. She adds value to our defensive staff by advising players about their skills and positions. Tori is currently employed by Hagerstown Elementary School.
Volunteer Coach: Nate Logston
Coach Nate has provided insights and valuable scrimmaging experiences for our teams over the past 10+ years. He has helped coach our JV and Club teams on multiple occasions. Nate attended Ball State
University and is a Business Owner and Architect who has been designing for 18 years.
Volunteer Coach: Betsy Swimm
Coach Betsy has been coaching since 1995 and has coached at every level K-12. She is the Founder and Director of the Nettle Creek Volleyball Club. Betsy has her Master’s Degree in Physical Education with a
Specialization in Coaching from Ball State University. She is a Level 5 Coach as recognized by the National Coaching Standards. While being an IHSAA Volleyball Official, she volunteers to help keep our entire
program organized. She has been a Teacher at Hagerstown High School for 26 years.
History
Hagerstown Volleyball got its start in the GAA (Girls Athletic Association) over 50 years ago. We joined the IHSAA (Indiana High School Athletic Association) in 1972.
